After this incident, Jake becomes super interested in martial arts. So he joins his school's wrestling team, attends karate classes on the weekends, practices parkour and climbing, and even learns about weapons. He is naturally good at stealth, detection, and staff spinning.

At age 18, Jake embarks on his first secret mission on Friday, May 10th, 2030, the week before his high school graduation.

Jake secretly searches through his father John's case files to see if he has any info about the terrorists, and it turns out that John has a history of capturing them before Jake was born. They escaped prison.

He becomes the original NightHawk, a symbolic warrior that he adopts after observing a suburban hawk living in his back yard that seemingly has the ability to communicate with him. He builds his battle suit with scrap, then searches NYC for three terrorists: Rux Denver, Henry Wilson, and Frank Gannon. Jake chases them down and never gives up until they are captured . . . or dead.

Because Jake barely survived his first mission, he refuses to continue crime fighting and begins majoring in criminal justice, respecting his father's hopes. However, luckily he keeps his suit for his own safety, because his second mission is to survive the unforeseen plan of an assassin.

He developed the character's multi-personality based on the many influences of his own past experiences, dreams, and inspirations. Throughout the series, Jake struggles with his own morality, as Michael struggled with who he truly wanted to be in life, especially during early adulthood. Other characters are inspired by the closest people he has known over this time, and by existing characters that he truly admires. Michael intends to create a whole new perspective in the superhero genre by expressing these characters in many forms of media.
